Kids in the Kitchen

I love teaching both adults and kids to cook or bake..but thats me! I hear from so many other parents how daunting it is, or how it uses up every ounce of patience they have. Here are some tips to help you succeed with the kiddos in the kitchen:

  1. SAFETY is key… age depending have rules for oven use/knives etc...

  2. Be prepared - try to make sure you have all ingredients (or substitutes) before you even suggest baking/cooking

  3. Let the kids get hands on - measuring/cleaning/mixing

  4. Embrace the mess - there will be a mess!!!

  5. Be prepared for IMPERFECTION...but still try the food!!

  6. Delegate jobs depending on age and how many kids you are working with: lining the tin with liners (for younger kids), 2 eggs in a recipe - let each kid break one, measuring ingredients: older kids — Do whatever works for you and your mix of kids!

  7. Read through the recipe first -- great reading practice for kids who hate to read.

  8. Double or half a recipe if needed: math skills

  9. Any science you can talk about?? Raising agents, purpose of different ingredients etc.

  10. Don't get too caught up on tips 7, 8,9 - they are just ideas!!

  11. Cleaning is part of cooking and baking, and a great way to help kids be responsible!

HAVE FUN AND RELAX - YOUR KIDS WILL!!!!!!
